Chapter Twenty

Two Decades Ago

The morning after Jane and Paul’s encounter with the amber light, the hallway telephone jangled. Jane yanked the covers over her head to grab another hour of sleep before church. A weight eased onto the edge of her mattress.

Jane rolled over, ready to smart-off, but the tired woman gazing back with an all too familiar dread sent energy through Jane like a strong cup of coffee.

Her mother set a soft hand on Jane’s blanketed leg. “I’m afraid Roy was in a crash last night.”

Jane sat up with a glower. “No way.” Impossible. Roy had been way too tired for that, too settled-in for the night when she and Paul left. “Is he okay?”

Her mother smoothed the covers and stared out the window. “He was barreling down Seven Hills, Jane. Too fast. Didn’t have a seatbelt on. Drunk, I’m guessing. You kids—”

“Oh my, God. Is he in the hospital?”

Her mother’s eyes glistened. “Janey, sweetie. It was instant.”

“No.” Jane’s voice shook. She leapt from the bed, stumbled out of the covers, and ran to her desk. She grabbed her Nokia cellphone and rapidly stamped out Paul’s number.

It rang and rang.
